Floodproofing your property is water proofing your home, raising the house above flood levels or protection against sewer back up during heavy rains. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has developed a Guide to Floodproofing.

If you know that a flood is coming, and you are in the floodplain, you should shut off the gas and electricity and move valuable contents to a higher elevation. In a flooding situation it is always helpful to have a prepared check list!
